Timberstone won a national award from Golf Digest as one of the best new golf courses to open in 1998. The architect of record for the course is the esteemed Jerry Matthews, considered the Grandfather of Michigan Golf Architecture (with his father Bruce being the Great Grandfather).

Paul Albanese had the distinct honor to be the Project Architect for Jerry at Timberstone during which time Jerry and Paul created many interesting and special design features that set this course up to be nationally recognized as one of the best public/resort projects in the USA. Jerry graciously allowed Paul to use this design as part of his portfolio for induction into the American Society of Golf Course Architects.

The key to the success of Timberstone lies in its routing, and its use of natural features as a genesis of form. The goal was to have golfers slowly trek up the mountain, without realizing they were ascending, only to be surprised by the vista as they cascade down the final holes on each nine hole loop. And, by incorporating the rock present on the site with the golf features, the entire experience leaves golfers aching for more.

Gerald Matthews, architect of record.
